I don’t often disagree with people I admire … but I did this time.
She told me it wasn’t wise to let your co-workers and employees know that they were appreciated too often, and that they, especially if they were paid workers, should know that it was “just their job”!!
Maybe it doesn’t work for others, but I like to let my co-workers, and employees know that I appreciate the time and effort they give to working hard, working well and helping them enjoy the work their hands are doing, the for-thought they need to give to their work, for turning up, for doing the mundane with a cheerful heart… not always easy when the work load is busy. Not always easy when you’re having an off day yourself and the place you work in is full of people in various states of “mood”!!
People need to know that they are valued … and noticed!
I work much better when I know that what I do is appreciated, as much of our daily lives and jobs are filled with routine, mundane and seemingly endless things we do, day in, day out.
The dream of bigger and better, of less mundane and more glamorous, is always a beckoning finger, but is not always the thing that will satisfy or bring reward.
I suppose sometimes it’s easy to overlook the “faithfulness in small thing” mindset … yet most often it is those people who are faithful in the small, faithful in the routines and possibly boring things, that actually make life work more smoothly for us!
Your daily cup of coffee, your laundry done, your room tidied, the smile to encourage you when someone else has said something to belittle you… your appreciation of that person serving you, may be the highlight of their day!
Worth thinking about eh?
